Aunt Polly rats Tom out after she figures out that Tom had actually come over from Jacksons island to listen in on the conversation that they had about Tom. Tom then proceeds to tell her that the reason that they had come over, was so that they could hide behind the church Before the funeral. Tom says that if he had told them that he was there then the joke wouldn't have worked. She says that lying makes it a hundred times worse, but Tom insisted that he wasn't lying. He then tells her that he kissed her and wishes that she had woken up, and that he had written his love on a piece of bark in his jacket. Tom leaves for school and after many times wanting to check the jacket, finally does and sees it then says "I could forgive the boy if he'd committed a million sins!"
